United Cerebral Palsy

The mission of UCP is to provide an environment where people with disabilities and aging conditions, such as cerebral palsy, Parkinson's, spina bifida, spinal cord injury, stroke, Alzheimer's disease, etc. receive individualized programs and support services. The Adult Day Services Program serves a diverse population of individuals 18+ who have disabilities and/or aging conditions. The program encourages participants to remain active and maintain their level of independence. The Art Bridge Studio gives participants a chance to work creatively through painting, woodworking and ceramics. Many UCP artists have had their works displayed throughout the country. Careers Unlimited, our employment programs offers support to individuals with disabilities to secure and maintain successful employment.

Individuals and families who approach the agency for help are offered an innovative, holistic treatment approach that enables each person to lead as independent and productive a life as possible. Intensive specialized programmings for children with disabilities are offered, regardless of ability to pay.

One participant, Charlotte, had been attending UCP of Central Ohio since 2001. She was encouraged to join the Art Bridge Studio many times but her reply was usually "Maybe, I'll think about it." After five years of persistent invitations from the art instructor, Charlotte decided to give it a try. Within one year she had her work exhibited in four shows and sold three paintings. Upon selling the first painting, she shouted with delight! "I never knew I could paint. When I actually sold one, I was so excited, it was unreal to me. I never felt like I was good enough to do anything to merit someone else's attention."

Cy Pres Award Donation

Due to United Way of Central Ohio's realignment of community priorities, UCP of Central Ohio will experience a loss of $338,012 annual operating loss beginning in Fiscal Year 2009. With this gift from Dworken & Berstein, we plan to further initiate plans that will help the agency to operate without its full United Way support. Some of the ways in which this financial gift will be utilized are: reinvestment of agency reserves and creating a line of credit which will help us to pro-long our reserve;, creating a for-profit venture which will provide sustainable source of funding for the agency's programs; increasing our development programming by implementing new fundraising events as well as increasing our submission of grants for general operating monies; our Executive Director will work to strengthen our relationship with community partners and work to form collaborations that positively benefit the agency and the community and lastl;, embark on a Public Awareness Campaign to increase the visibility of the agency and the services provided to increase referrals, volunteers and donor support.
