The Leukemia & Lymphoma SocietyLLS is the world's largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research and providing education and patient services. More than 823,000 Americans have leukemia, Hodgkin or non-Hodgkin lymphoma or myeloma. Leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children under the age of 20. Today's survival rate is 85%! Lymphomas are the most common blood cancers and incidences increase with age. Research has led or contributed to advances such as chemotherapy, bone marrow and stem cell transplantation and new, targeted oral therapies.Since 1970, the LLS Northern Ohio Chapter has been fulfilling its mission to provide patient services, patient aid and educational programs throughout 31 counties in the northern tier of Ohio. The NOH is nationally recognized for these services as well as support groups and pediatric programming. With improved therapies and treatments, the number of long term cancer survivors continues to rise accounting for an ever growing population in need of no-going support and education. In the fiscal 2008, more than $185,000 in patient financial aid will be provided to over 400 families in Northern Ohio, one of the highest amounts of aid allocated by an individual chapter within the LLS network of 68 chapters across the country. Cy Pres Award DonationThe mission of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is to improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their families and to find a cure for blood cancers. When someone is diagnosed, they have two immediate needs. The first is for information about their disease and secondly financial aid to help face the costs of treatment. The funds from this award will be used to help the society provide information and education programs to over 2,000 people in northern Ohio that will contact us in the coming year. This money will also help the society provide over $190,000 in financial aid to patients who need help to pay for transportation, testing costs and medication. By providing up to $500 a year to each patient in the Financial Aid Program, we are working to improve their quality of life as they are on their way towards achieving remission. All services are offered free of charge to patients and their families. website: http://www.leukemia-lymphoma.org/all_chap |
