Rotary International Gift of Life

The Gift of Life program mission is to further the cause of world peace and understanding by providing life saving open heart surgery to children from infancy to 18 years of age with congenital heart defects. We serve children and their extended families from around the world who do not normally have access to cardiac care and for whom we are the last hope.

We have also helped sponsor outreach medical missions to send the medical team to areas without any access to cardiac care. Dr. Hennein from Rainbow has identified hospitals capable of providing the basics and assembled the team needed for pediatric open heart surgeries in country. Dr. Hennein's team was able to provide 20 children's surgeries in their last 2 week mission trip to Nairobi Kenya after they were able to improve some of the equipment and support capabilities of the Hospital. Dr. Hennein's team was able to teach and train their local counterparts in performing these surgeries. With follow up missions back to Kenya and in time elsewhere, we will be able to continue to help serve children in need and further train local Doctors and medical staff. The goal would be to continue these missions and serve more children locally while also identifying and bringing the more complicated cases here for the unique pediatric cardio logical services that Rainbow Babies and Children's can provide. As Dr. Hennein has shared with us, for every child in Africa with HIV/AIDS there are 6 to 8 children with uncorrected congenital heart disease. A single operation can be curative for the majority of those children.

Over the last 3-1/2 years Jim Frame and I, with the support of several other people both within and outside of Rotary, have run our District's Gift of Life program on a shoestring without much of a budget at all. Until this year, I doubt we have had more than a few hundred dollars on hand at any one time until we had a child identified. Once we have a child identified as coming in for heart surgery, we have gone to individual Rotary Clubs around the Northeast Ohio District 6630 and raised the $5,000 token payment that University Hospitals' Rainbow Babies and Children's require to off set consumables and incidental expenses and the $500- $1,000 of related family costs such as Ronald McDonald house and related necessities to help the family meet the health costs of their child while here. We have served more than 40 children this way. Last fall my club, the Chagrin Valley Rotary Club, conducted a fund raiser and was able to generate $40,000 towards our goal to serve 12 children at Rainbow Babies and Children's hospital every year. Those monies are the core of allowing us to have a budget for this Rotary Year starting July 1, 2008. The funds you are donating will allow us to reach the $ 70,000 per year threshold we need to sustain and plan for 12 children to be served each year.
