Genesis House

Genesis House assists victims of domestic violence in the resolution of their immediate family crisis. The purpose is to keep all family members safe while fostering positive changes in the family system, and in the community as a whole. Lorain County residents over the age of 18 who are currently experiencing physical, emotional, and/or sexual abuse are targeted for services. In calendar year 2009 Genesis House sheltered 172 women and children. The hotline calls and community-based services such as the support groups, legal advocacy, hospital support, and community outreach services brought the total number of people served to over 6,857. The residential piece of the Genesis House program is only a part of the overall services provided. Clients are served for up to one year. Service often begins while a person is still immersed in the abusive home environment. Building a person’s awareness level and providing options precede a shelter stay. Service terminates when she is firmly established in a safe, independent living situation. Emotional support, legal advocacy, and aftercare services are a follow-up to shelter.

Cy Pres Award Donation

Thank you for your generous donation to our Prevention Services in the schools. We go to 38 schools in the county to talk about: dating violence, date rape, understanding gender roles and stereotypes, safety planning, and parties and sexual violence.   Students are in desperate need of factual, honest information since less than 25% of teens say they have discussed dating violence with their parents; and 1 in 3 teenagers report knowing someone who has been hit, punched, kicked, slapped, strangled, or physically hurt by their partner.
