About Akron Children's Hospital

From humble beginnings as a day nursery in 1890, Akron Children's Hospital has evolved into the largest pediatric health care system in northeast Ohio, operating two freestanding pediatric hospitals and offering services at over 70 locations across the region. Our more than 30 pediatric specialties draw over half a million patients each year, and include children, teens and adults from all 50 states and around the world.

The Heart Center at Akron Children's Hospital provides complete cardiac services to patients of all ages with pediatric and congential heart disease. Our philosophy is to accomplish the greatest amount of good with the least amount of intervention, choosing non-invasive procedures whenever appropriate. Indeed, few places surpass Akron Children's Heart Center's expertise and success in treating congenital heart disease in children, teens and adults.

The Showers Family Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at Akron Children's Hospital offers comprehensive clinical treatment, including stem cell/bone marrow transplantation, for children and teens with all types of cancer and bleeding/clotting disorders. On average, the center cares for six newly diagnosed children with cancer each month, ranking in the top third of pediatric cancer centers in the United States in terms of the number of new cancer cases seen each year. The center registers more than 6,000 outpatient clinic visits and 700 hospital admissions annually.

Cy Pres Award Donation

The funds provided will support the salary of an onsite teacher to tutor cancer and hematology patients who miss school due to long hospital stays or frequent outpatient treatments. When these children are in the hospital for weeks or months at a time, school work can pile up. This teacher works with them and their home school district to make sure they stay moving at the same academic pace as their peers. As Akron Children's Hospital treats the body, we also want to ensure that the mind continues to grow as well. The funds donated for the Heart Center will be used within the center for continuing staff education, such as inservices and national conferences, where staff will learn about new techniques in cardiac care. Also, funds will be used for advocacy groups for patients with congenital heart defects.

We are so grateful for this donation and all the possibilities that it will open for the patients in our care. Your involvement keeps our promise alive - "to treat every child as if they were our own."
